It’s so nice to be able to neatly categorise things- it makes my brain happy! It’s no wonder then that dog trainers are keen to label themselves as FF R+ LIMA BALANCED etc. I used to want to try and find the right label for me too.

The problem with these labels and/ or groups is that they do more to divide than they do to unite us. I have learnt SO much from force free trainers! I’ve also learnt a ton from balanced trainers. I am able to name some awful trainers who sit in both camps who I’d like to never be associated with too.

You can always ask me how I would train a particular dog a particular thing, or what tools I would wouldn’t use in that situation. I am not however going to give you a one-word label to describe how I train dogs now ♥️

Warm your dogs up!

We know it’s common sense for us to warm up before exercise. However, I see clients who are heading straight out the car and into their local park letting their dog sprint around. You are SO much more likely to get injuries this way.

Start with some on lead time if you have to, scatter feed or do some detection work. Get your dog thinking and walking before they’re sprinting around. This will probably help with your engagement too!

Discovering WHY your dog behaves the way they do is such a key way to help them begin to see the world differently.

Internal factors such as nutrition, pain and health can play a key role in your dogs perception of their environment.

SO often (esp with aggression cases) we find undiagnosed pain or health issues. 9/10 the vet will send the dog home as perfectly healthy and this is why we have to press for a pain trial or proper testing. If you think you’re dog is behaving outside of their norm and there ain’t an obvious trigger for this, you might have to get a bit pushy with your vet! Vets are amazing but they’re not trained much in behaviour and obviously don’t want to give medication & testing where they don’t think it’s needed!

A behaviourists job is to look at all of the information you can give us and think about lifestyle changes that might help, management until the dog is ‘trained’ AND to help you train the dog.

If anyone is offering to solve a complexed behavioural problem like reactivity or SA in one session or through a 2 week board and train RUN.

Behaviours like these take tons of hard work and time. Between sessions you should be expecting to do loads of reps and put the time in to modify your dogs behaviour.

Any ‘quick fixes’ that appear to work for SA and reactivity are more likely than not a result of just suppressing the behaviour, not changing how the dog feels. This isn’t what I want for my dogs! Treating your dogs with respect and love means putting the time in to change their perception of the world.

There is no dog training secret or quick series of tips & tricks. It’s tons of boring repetitions and a good trainer to help guide you 🙌🏻💛

It’s good to try and find a trainer who aligns with your ideologies, but I would definitely argue it’s not the most important thing to look for!

Anyone can create a website/ insta and plaster ‘force free, LIMA, R+’ all over it. Here are some things I would look for first:

Experience:
How long has the trainer been working with dogs for? Do they have experience with the particular problem you’re trying to get help with?

Reviews:
Does the trainer have lots of reviews (not in their own site, anyone can make those) from google / yahoo etc? Can they provide references to past happy clients if you ask?

Credentials:
Which bodies is this trainer accredited by? Have they studied or spent time working towards accreditation by anyone legitimate?

The trainers dogs:
Do these dogs look how you want your dog to look? Aka, are they happy / off-lead / shown in the context of other animals?

I’m sure I’ve missed loads of stuff here so you tell me, what else do you look for in a dog trainer / behaviourist?

I LOVE discussing this one with people (esp other trainers).

I’ll be honest the caption may be a little misleading because I do believe dog trainers dogs should in general be good examples of the trainers capabilities. A dog trainers dog should have clear markers, recall and be generally reliable in whatever environment their owner puts them in.

I do however disagree with the idea that one trainers dog should be at the same level as every other trainers dog.

Let’s set the scene:
Trainer 1 buys 8 week old puppies from great parents who have been raised and bred with purpose and care. Trainer 1’s dogs are brilliantly trained, can stooge imagine any situation, have a fancy heel and are competing at high levels in a sport.

Trainer 2 rescues dogs with a difficult background, the dogs have unknown genetics which contribute to their behaviour. Trainer 2 works through these dogs behavioural problems and gets them to a great standard of behaviour, but not to the same level as trainer 1.

I am not here to bash any trainer. BOTH trainer 1 & 2 have done impressive training in these scenarios. Both would likely suit different types of clients a little better. I am merely trying to point out that dogs aren’t blank slates, not everyone is ‘starting from scratch’ and when we are looking for the right trainer these factors may be worth considering.
