Understanding the reasons that a dog bites is key in efficiently preventing this from happening. Nipping and mouthing in a young puppy is of course to be expected, however left to unchecked and to continue this can become very painful! Adult dogs may resort to biting for a number of reasons, from fear to an over active prey drive. Properly identifying the underlying causes here is a top priority in designing a treatment plan for the animal.
In addition, during this time of re-balancing the dog it is important to learn and finely tune yourself to warning signs the dog is giving, allowing us to better pre-empt and hence deter aggressive behaviour. Here I find it helpful to really give my clients a crash course on canine body language so that they can start to better understand their pets.
